One of the benefits of being an IBEW member in the construction division is our top of the line apprenticeship program. This program trains our country's best electricians and has high standards that ensure the work being done is top-notch and that it is being done in a safe manner.
Thanks to this program, hundreds of thousands of electricians have been trained and been able to provide good middle class lifestyles for their families. However, our apprenticeship is coming under attack. The Department of Labor is currently considering a proposal that would create a system for non-union contractors to create a watered down apprenticeship program. Although construction is currently exempt, the IBEW believes that it will not be exempt when the final proposal is issued.
The IBEW International is asking for all locals regardless of division to help stop this new rule. The Department of Labor is currently accepting comments on whether they should implement it. IBEW President Lonnie Stephenson has personally asked Local 36 to submit comments via this website so that the Department of Labor knows that we oppose this dangerous change. They are asking that at least 50% of our members submit comments, so please do it right now. Below I have included some instructions on what you need to do. Thank you in advance for your help in defending our apprenticeship program.
